Since March 2015, Saudi Arabia, with critical aid and assistance from the United States, has inflicted a starvation blockade against the people of Yemen that could rightfully be called genocidal.
The United Nations has estimated that as many as five million Yemenis are on the brink of starvation, and ten million more are close behind.
The Saudi bombing campagins that target critical Yemeni infrastructure like schools, hospitals, markets, and water treatment facilities, would not be possible without the material support of the United States. It is American contractors that repair and maintain the Saudi's American-made planes with American parts and munitions. It is American aircraft that provide the midair refueling that allows the Saudi Air Force to reach targets in the far West of Yemen. It is American intelligence that provides targets for the Saudis to strike.
The Saudi air campaign is the largest factor keeping the Houthi rebels from taking control of Yemen. Ground resistance to the Houthi advance has proven largely ineffective. Furthermore, it contains elements of Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, a jihadist group responsible for the attack on the USS Cole, the Charlie Hebdo Massacre, and an attempted airplane bombing over Detroit, Michigan. By supporting the Saudi air campaign, the United States is effectively providing material support for AQAP.
If the United States were to cease this material support, it is likely the entire bloody affair would end. Numerous attempts by US politicians have tried and failed to end this support. The US Congress is too throughly ensared by lobbyists from Raytheon, Boeing, and Northrop-Grumman to end the war. Further, they have been convinced by their own talking points that the Houthis are an Iranian sock-puppet.
Unfortunately, the small portion of the American public that can be bothered with such matters is too worried about the alleged Chinese mistreatment of the Uyghur muslims to look in their own back yard. The rest genuinely believe that the US military must police the world "for our freedom." A pox on them.
US support for this genocide campaign will prove to be one of the darkest chapters in American history. When the true depravity of our involvement comes to light, Americans will emerge from their apathy and wonder how in the hell we let this happen. That is, if the righteous fury of the surviving Yemenis does not kill us all first. In that case, a reprisal attack will have similarly come "from the clear blue sky," just like 9/11.
